Teltonika FMM003 vs FMC003 vs Eye: which to choose

March 26, 2026 · Suso Merino · CEO

Teltonika FMM003 and FMC003 devices and Eye accessories on a dark background

If you’re choosing a telematics device for your fleet, at Trackia we’ve consolidated the Teltonika catalog into a simple combination: two plug & play OBD trackers (FMM003 and FMC003) and two Bluetooth Low Energy accessories (Eye Beacon BTSID1 and Eye Sensor BTSMP1). Each piece has a specific role, and they’re combined to cover everything from commercial vans to heavy fleets with refrigerated loads.

In this article we compare the four devices in depth: connectivity, the data they collect, use cases, installation and when each one makes sense. The idea is that you come away knowing which combination fits your operation before talking to any provider.

Teltonika FMM003: the OBD tracker for light fleets and insurance telematics

The FMM003 is a compact tracker that plugs directly into the vehicle’s OBD-II port. No wiring to the engine, no mandatory professional installation.

Connectivity: LTE Cat M1 with 2G (GSM) fallback. Cat M1 is the band designed specifically for IoT, with lower power consumption and better coverage in rural areas or basements than conventional LTE.

GNSS: multi-constellation receiver (GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BEIDOU, SBAS, QZSS, DGPS, AGPS) with 33 channels and −165 dBm sensitivity. Hot start in under 1 s, cold start in 35 s.

OEM data via OBD: this is the key differentiator. The FMM003 isn’t limited to GPS position — it reads parameters directly from the vehicle’s computer: actual fuel (not estimated from kilometers), actual odometer, ECU error codes and other OEM PIDs.

Built-in features: crash detection, jamming detection, excessive idling, GNSS fuel counter, towing detection, automatic and manual geofencing, green driving, overspeeding detection.

Bluetooth 4.0: pairing with Eye accessories and other low-power LE sensors.

Internal battery: 170 mAh Li-Ion to send a disconnection event if someone tries to unplug it.

Ideal for: light commercial fleets (5-200 vans), UBI insurance telematics (pay-as-you-drive), vehicle rental, leasing, driver logbooks.

Teltonika FMC003: the OBD tracker for fleets with a high event rate

The FMC003 is the FMM003’s sibling. Same form factor, same plug & play OBD installation, same firmware, the same tracking, OEM and crash detection features and Bluetooth compatibility.

The key difference: the FMC003 uses LTE Cat 1 instead of Cat M1.

Cat 1 offers more bandwidth (up to 10 Mbps download / 5 Mbps upload) compared with the typical sub-1 Mbps of Cat M1. In practice, that means the FMC003 can:

  • Send events more frequently without getting saturated.
  • Load new firmware (FOTA) faster.
  • Transmit batches of pending data after a period without coverage without building up a queue.

When to choose the FMC003 over the FMM003:

  • Fleets that generate many events per minute: urgent deliveries with lots of stops, emergency vehicles, taxis/ride-hailing.
  • Operations that need near-real-time data (dispatch center control).
  • Vehicles in areas with good standard LTE coverage (Cat 1 works wherever regular LTE reaches).

When to choose the FMM003:

  • Any fleet where the modem’s power consumption matters (vehicles that spend a lot of time switched off).
  • Areas with patchy coverage: Cat M1 is optimized for range and penetration.
  • A tighter cost per vehicle (Cat M1 is usually slightly cheaper than Cat 1).

In many mixed fleets we combine the two: the FMM003 in secondary vehicles and the FMC003 in critical ones.

Eye Beacon (BTSID1): passive identification

The Eye Beacon is a ruggedly housed Bluetooth Low Energy tag designed to pair with any FMM003 or FMC003 tracker via BLE.

Main function: passive identification. The beacon broadcasts its ID over Bluetooth at regular intervals; the nearest vehicle tracker detects it and links it.

Real use cases:

  • Driver identification: each driver carries their Eye Beacon (on a keychain or a badge). When they get into the vehicle, the tracker detects their beacon and automatically records who’s behind the wheel. No RFID cards, no push buttons.
  • Tool and asset tracking: toolbox, generator, technician’s kit. Know which asset is in each van and when.
  • Tracking unpowered trailers: stick a beacon on the trailer and you’ll know which tractor unit it’s hitched to.

Key specs:

  • Up to 5 years of battery life (replaceable Li/MnO2).
  • Range of up to 500 meters in direct line of sight.
  • iBeacon and Eddystone protocols.
  • IP67: dust- and water-resistant, suitable for outdoor use.
  • ATEX variant available for industrial environments (oil & gas, chemicals).

Eye Sensor (BTSMP1): Bluetooth sensing with 4 sensors

The Eye Sensor is the Eye Beacon “with senses.” Same physical format, also Bluetooth Low Energy, also IP67, also with 5 years of battery life, but it includes four built-in sensors:

  • Temperature (−20 °C to 60 °C, EN12830 certified for refrigerated transport).
  • Relative humidity.
  • Accelerometer / movement.
  • Magnetic detection (opening and closing).

It connects via BLE to the vehicle’s tracker (FMM003 or FMC003), which forwards the data to Trackia’s server together with the vehicle’s position and telemetry.

Real use cases:

  • Cold chain in refrigerated transport: continuous temperature and humidity in the cargo box, with alerts if the range is breached. Automated regulatory compliance.
  • Unauthorized opening detection: magnet + sensor on the trailer door. If it’s opened outside working hours or away from an authorized delivery point, you get an immediate alert.
  • Monitoring sensitive cargo: medical equipment, delicate instruments, electronics. The accelerometer detects impacts or excessive vibration.
  • Warehouses and job sites: BLE location of tools coming in and out, environmental monitoring of specific areas.

Bluetooth range: up to 80 meters to the tracker (less than the Beacon because it transmits more data).

For mid-sized and large fleets, it’s normal to use several combinations in parallel depending on the vehicle type. In the personalized Trackia demo we review your real case and recommend the specific mix with a fixed quote.

Installation: zero friction

The FMM003 and FMC003 trackers install in under 5 minutes with no wiring: find the vehicle’s OBD port (under the steering wheel in most modern cars and vans), plug in the tracker and wait for the green LED to stay solid. We’ll let you know when we detect it on Trackia’s server.

The Eye Beacon and Eye Sensor accessories are mounted with industrial adhesive, magnets or screws depending on the surface. Configuration (linking each accessory to a vehicle or driver) is done from the Trackia dashboard in seconds.

For large fleets we offer an installation service by our own team: we come to your premises and get all vehicles up and running in a typical workday. More details in pricing and services.

Regulatory compliance and compatibility

All the Teltonika hardware we use at Trackia meets European standards: RED-CE, RoHS, eCall. Data is stored on European servers by default, with documented GDPR compliance.

For fleets subject to digital tachograph regulations (trucks and buses), see the complete guide to remote tachograph download obligations from July 2026 and how we automate it.
